Kenall was retained by the USACE-Galveston District to collect geotechnical data necessary to prepare a dredge material management plan (DMPP) for the Houston Ship Channel. The project area included six levees on land-based sites and six levees on water-bound sites.
We performed geotechnical core and soil sampling and advanced geotechnical laboratory testing, and provided general geotechnical engineering support. Based on the site conditions, we employed a variety of methods to access the 56 borehole sites – Geotechnical core drilling was performed by track mounted rig, buggy rigs, and rice and cane rigs. Drilling on water-bound sites was accomplished by using barge and truck-mounted rigs. On the basis of the results of our geotechnical exploration, we performed levee slope stability analyses to determine approximate allowable maximum levee heights and ultimate placement area capacities for placement of dredged maintenance material.
